Former Olympic gold medalist Andre Ward could take his biggest step yet toward stardom tonight on Showtime. Or he could get KTFO by trash-talking slugger Edison Miranda.
The beauty of boxing is that we won't know until they actually start trading punches. If you aren't able to watch them do that, you can follow along with our Spartan117 as he provides round by round updates on our main page.
The action begins with John Molina in an undercard fight at 9 pm Eastern.

Andre Ward vs. Edison Miranda: Predictions
The Franchise says...
Other than two superstars facing off against each other, Saturday's super middleweight fight between Andre Ward and Edison Miranda is the kind I like best: a young fighter trying to make the jump from prospect to contender gets a stiff test from a dangerous veteran.
And make no mistake, Miranda is dangerous. The powerful but somewhat wild Colombian was thought of as a potential middleweight champion until two years ago when he was knocked out by Kelly Pavlik.
He still has only three career losses (that one to Pavlik and two to Arthur Abraham), and even though it seem like he's been around for a while, he's only 28. If Miranda lands a solid one on the relatively untested chin of his foe, it could be lights out.
It also feels like Ward should have progressed further since his 2004 Olympic gold medal, but he's been handled cautiously and had to take a few months off several times due to nagging injuries. There's no question that he has a lot of tools, but he hasn't fought anyone yet who's made him put them all into use.
Andre went the distance his last time out, so we know he can go 12 rounds if necessary. That's important because I think his boxing skills favor him in a longer fight, and despite his edge in experience, Miranda has only fought 12 rounds twice in his career.
It does worry me a bit when I see Ward quoted saying he wants to win in spectacular fashion, because getting into a firefight with Miranda may not be such a wise idea. Certainly you'd expect that Ward will have to weather a storm at some point, probably in the early rounds.
This pick is being made largely on faith, and I wouldn't bet the house on it, but I like Ward to emerge with a hard-earned but unanimous decision.
Uatu says...
The skills will pay the bills. I believe Ward will win on points, and I also have the sad feeling that he may bore us in doing so. I hope not, but with his somewhat shaky chin in the past and his recovery from injuries, I see Ward trying his best to stay out of the fray.
Ward by decision.

Spartan117 says...
Call me crazy but I like Miranda's chances in this fight. His 3 major losses are from 2 of the top fighters in their respective classes. Ward's chin will be tested tonight. If he can take the punishment then he'll be able to out-point Miranda but I think Miranda's strength will take him to a late stoppage victory.

Ward Gets Big Challenge Against Miranda
Olympic gold medalist Andre Ward will have a chance to prove himself in the super middleweight division next month when he will face his toughest opponent yet, Edison Miranda. According to ESPN, Ward signed on for a bout with the hard-punching Miranda set for May 16.
This is a good fight for Ward, who has had a slow climb since he turned professional due to a knee injury early in his career. Miranda is coming off of a knockout win against lesser-known opponent Joey Vargas.
The fight, which will take place in Ward's hometown of Oakland, California, has been picked up by Showtime and will be featured on their "ShoBox: The New Generation" program.
This is a great fight for Ward. Miranda is a decent name in the super middleweight division due to his power combined with his mouth. It's a safe bet that Miranda will start the trash talk any day now.
This will be an important fight for both fighters, with Ward on the rise and Miranda struggling to establish himself as an elite competitor after losses to Kelly Pavlik and Arther Abraham (twice).
If you can't catch the broadcast on Showtime, remember that we will have round by round coverage right here on May 16.

Round by Round: Miranda v. Abraham
The last time these two fought in the ring, Arthur Abraham had his jaw broken and Edison Miranda lost because of low blows. These two fighters have made this fight personal, as many of Miranda's bouts are.
Abraham is undefeated while Miranda has two losses: one to Abraham and one to Kelly Pavlik. Also, this is the first time Abraham has fought in the U.S.
The intros are finished and its time for the fight.
Rd 1: Abraham starts as the aggressor. He starts establishing the jab and makes it through Miranda's defense. Now both fighters feeling each other out. Miranda backs Abraham against the ropes. Abraham fights out. Abraham gets a left hook in and Miranda stumbles. Abraham now throwing good combos. Miranda now uses his trademark wide hook. Abraham now told to keeps his punches up after a body blow.
Spartan117: 10-9 Abraham
Rd 2: Miranda now steps forward and throws combos. Abraham is being stalked around the ring. Miranda keeps the intensity up. Abraham trapped against the ropes and blocks most of Miranda's shots. Abraham waves him in. Miranda hits nothing but gloves. Miranda lands a vicious body shot. Miranda gets warned for a low blow. Abraham takes his time for recovery. They start again after about 30 seconds. Abraham gets in some body shots but Miranda comes right back.
Spartan117: 10-9 Miranda
Rd 3: Miranda now starts keeping his punches upstairs. Abraham gets a big right hook in and Miranda waves him in. Abraham is sticking to his defense and not throwing as much as Miranda. Miranda is clearly the more active fighter. Miranda now gets warned for pushing. Abraham gets in a hard right hand and Miranda's knees buckle. Miranda still comes forward.
Spartan117: 10-9 Abraham
Rd 4: Miranda sticks to putting the pressure on. He gets three good body shots in. Abraham drops a huge left bomb and Miranda goes down. He makes it up but is clearly hurt. Abraham lands another another hard left and Miranda goes down hard again. He gets up again and receives more punishment, falling a third time from a right. The ref calls it. It's over.
The winner by TKO at 1:13 at the fourth round, Arthur Abraham.

Round by Round Coverage Abraham v. Miranda and Berto v. Rodriquez
The Boxing Watchers will be bringing you live round by round coverage of tonight's middleweight matchup between Arthur Abraham versus Edison Miranda. Then immediately following that bout, if it wraps up fast enough, I will be switching over to cover the HBO bout between welterweights Andre Berto and Miki Rodriquez. Tonight's fights should be explosive with lots of punches and knockdowns. Don't miss them!
I'm predicting a victory for Miranda and a victory for Berto.

Miranda vs. Kessler is on
Edison Miranda vs. Mikkel Kessler is on according to ESPN for May on Showtime.
This is a very interesting fight.
One can't help but wonder about where Miranda really fits in the boxing landscape. Is he a Mayorga-like trash talking brawler that won't be able to back up his talk against the elite? Consider Mayorga vs. Forrest and compare it with Miranda vs. Abraham. Then think of Mayorga vs. Oscar and Tito and compare them to Miranda vs. Pavlik.
What about Kessler? Impressive against Andrade. Undressed by Calzaghe.
Miranda also reminds Uatu of Tyson and to a lesser extent Juan Diaz (minus the power of course). If you can stand up to these "bullies", then you can take them on with skill. But standing up to them is, of course, no easy task.
But can Kessler stand up to the Panther? To be determined soon.

Thoughts...
All over the internet it is being reported that Calzaghe vs. Hopkins is a go. Uatu thinks that this might finally be a convincing loss for Hopkins. Joe Cal throws tons of punches and Hopkins does not. The thought here is that Joe Cal just completely outworks B Hop. Bernard will never be hurt or staggered or floored but will lose on points. Uatu also thinks that Joe Cal may actually be knocked down or at least shaky at some point from a lead right from Bernard.
After watching FNF, Uatu also thinks that Miranda will KO Pascal.
